With the soul of a poet and a hint of Caribbean rhythms scented with jazz, he gets his audiences soaring into the heart of the tropics. A great breath of fresh air.
Born in Montreal in 1976, Doody lived in Haiti for 17 years. Following his father’s murder, Doody’s family made the reverse journey, returning to Quebec, where Doody studied engineering.
As an amateur guitarist, he played for his own pleasure and focused on his studies until the day he caught the virus of the stage without warning. One evening he attended a concert given by his baptismal brother, also a musician, who asked him up on stage. Adrenalin then took over. He would make music his trade, despite reprimands from his family, who saw this decision in a very bad light. This was in 2003. He had just finished his studies and found himself taking a very different path from the one set out for him.
He began his artistic career with the group Tranzit. He is a lyricist and composer. Together they get people dancing to irresistible Afro-Caribbean rhythms. From the start they played in various Quebec venues and in festivals such as the Festival International Nuits d’Afrique and the Festival des Rythmes du Monde. Four years later, he chose to perform solo, accompanied by four musicians and two backup singers. Dancers would sometimes round out their show.
With his Caribbean background, Doody invented a style that was very much his own, blending West Indian and African musical style, coloured with jazz and samba. In 2009, his first single disc came out. Ça ne va pas nicely blended the reasonable accommodations beloved of Quebec. The song’s dancehall style is just a means of drawing attention. Doody wants to do Afrobeat and nothing else. The album he is working on now should be more faithful to their deeply rooted wish. It should come out at the end of 2009, in France initially.
