Idir is scheduled to play the Lincoln Center in NYC on July 18th. This will be his first performance in the US. We caught his show last year at nuits D'Afrique in Montreal. Check out the photos above.
Algerian-born Idir will share a bill with Morocco’s Najat Aatabou in “A Night in the Maghreb,” a concert that will introduce both world-renowned performers to an American audience for the first time. Paris-based Idir—born in the Kabylia region of Algeria—has been at the forefront of socially and politically relevant French-Algerian music since the 1970s, but this will be the first time he will perform for a US audience.
Idir first captured attention accidentally from a stand-in performance of the tender A Vava inouva on national radio in 1973. His rendition has gone on to be translated into more than seven languages, making him a leading voice of the Berber culture and identity (kabyle). Idir, a fixture in the French-Algerian music scene, garners attention not only from traditional fans but also from a new generation of younger admirers for his recent hip hop collaborations.
