I'm a 20 year veteran of the radio industry. I've worked in a variety of music formats (pop, rock, jazz ect). By far my most rewarding experience was when I worked with World Music. I was first seduced by the incredible (and diverse) sounds I was hearing from all corners of the globe. Blues from Mali...Balkan Beats from Central Europe...Salsa, Bhangra, Soukous, Fado...on and on. The music caught my attention, but it's the sharing nature of the people that turned me into a lover for life. The fans, the musicians, the journalists, the promoters all seem to explore their passion for these wonderful rhythms from pretty much an equal place. I can't tell you how many times I've seen musicians finish a set on stage and then join the fans in front to dance and enjoy the next performance. There is very little ego in World Music.
I'm also constantly amazed by watching so many drastically different cultures (some of which have a hard time co-existing in the real world) fit so perfectly together in the World Music world. This music has no borders. There are big, game-changing lessons to be learned from this!
It's this concept of the "border-less, shared experience" that has lead me to create MYWORLDMUSICFRIENDS. I want this to be a place in which everyone who loves World Music...fans, musicians, journalists, whoever...can gather to share stories, experiences, photos, videos ect. By utilizing modern technologies and combining this website with outside sources like FaceBook, Twitter, YouTube, Blip.Fm and so on, we are able to make this big world a little smaller. Let’s build a network for all to share the passion of World Music.
